I m not Confused - Ajithkumar
‘I’M NOT CONFUSED’
…says Ajith, stating that issues relating to Mankatha’s release in Tamil Nadu will be sorted out soon
Srinivasa Ramanujam
His upcoming flick Mankatha is described as ‘a Venkat Prabhu game’. And, the current film he’s shooting for — Billa 2 — will be a sort of game for actor Ajith as well. A game he’s played before, and won. Known to be an actor who speaks up for issues close to his heart, Thala — as he’s fondly referred to by his fans — opens up to Chennai Times in a freewheeling chat about his films, the change of guard in the state and more.
• How has Mankatha shaped up?
Going by the post production reports, I’m feeling positive and upbeat about the project.
• How did you arrive on the salt-and-pepper look in the film and how do you expect audiences to react to it?
After hearing the story, it was a unanimous decision by everyone concerned with the project that I retain my natural look. As far as audience reaction is concerned, it’s up to them to answer once they have watched the movie.
• Would you say that Mankatha is a fitting 50th film for your fans? What are its highlights?
Yes, it is my 50th film and it’s a proud moment in my life. Firstly, the film has a good star cast and great music by Yuvan. It boasts of a promising director like Venkat Prabhu and has some very well-choreographed action sequences. Last, but not the least, the presence of Arjun in the film is a big advantage.
• Are you in a state of confusion with regard to Mankatha’s release now that there is a change in government and that the film is produced by Dhayanidhi Alagiri?
I’m not at all confused. I’m a professional and have fulfilled my professional obligations. The film’s producer, Dhayanidhi Alagiri, has conducted himself in a very professional manner. I’m sure he will sort out the issues relating to the release of the film. I’m not worried about the change in government; it’s the troublemakers within the industry I’m worried about.
• How do you see the new rule by Jayalalithaa in the state and its repercussions on the film industry?
As a common man, apart from our basic rights, law and order is of primary concern. I’m sure those matters are being looked into by the new rule. I strongly believe that there’ll be no political interferences as far as the film industry is concerned.
• How is Billa 2 shaping up and are you doing anything specific for your look in the film?
We’re into the second week of filming Billa 2. As on date, all is well and proceeding smoothly. It’s too early to divulge any other details about my role or the film.
• There have been instances in the last few months of you taking to the bike again; you took Venkat Prabhu on a bike ride and rode to Tirupathi with Chakri Toleti. How much of a biker are you?
I’m still very much a biker at heart. But, it’s practically impossible to indulge in it. It is only during moments like filming that I enjoy such luxuries.
• What next after Billa 2?
I don’t know what’ll happen post Billa 2. I’ll leave the future to destiny.
Quiz Ajith if he’s missing director Vishnuvardhan, who helmed Billa, and he says, “The success of Billa was a team effort. As and when time permits, I’m sure that Vishnu and I will work again.
CHAKRI TOLETI On his new director for Billa 2, the actor says, “I’m amazed at Chakri’s talent and am sure that he has it in him to live up to the expectations of fans and film buffs.”
Mankatha done, Yuvan holidays
The most promising music director had a very hectic schedule working for months for Thala’s ‘Mankatha’. Having gone through several rounds of composition and lots of reworks, the album is complete now. The mastering of CD is happening and soon the official announcement of audio launch date will be announced and this is the first information report we hear from producer Dayanidhi Azhagiri. (Audio Launch may be on August 3rd)
Yuvan Shankar Raja was initially supposed to work on nine tracks and on the spur of moment, they decided to delete one song, which makes things easier for them to launch the audio.

Dayanidhi Azhagiri’s strong promise on Mankatha
Producer Dayanidhi Azhagiri is on high praises for the entire team of ‘Mankatha’ for they have done a fabulous job. Starting from ‘Thala’ to the assistant technicians on the sets, it has been a tremendous work. Having sent the audio for the mastering, Dayanidhi Azhagiri makes a strong promise to the Thala fans that everything is gonna rock with the film.
‘Guys, it’s a promise and you’ll enjoy ‘Mankatha’ to the core’ says Dayanidhi Azhagiri, who is still to confirm the date of audio launch.
He has also denied rumours published in some portals pertaining to the film’s release issue with accordance to the political arena. ‘Not at all. Everything will go on as planned’ assures Dayanidhi Azhagiri, who confirms the film’s release by all means in August.

Shooting for Billa 2 begins - Times of India
One of Ajith’s most eagerly awaited projects Billa 2, directed by Chakri Toleti, has finally started rolling. A source from the sets informs, “The shooting for Billa 2 has started on July 14, at a popular studio in Hyderabad. The shooting has commenced with Ajith and the other lead characters. The crew will be shooting continuously till the end of the month after which they will take a short break.”
The film, which is said to be one of the costliest Ajith films to be made so far, also stars Mumbai-based model Huma Qureshi and Bruna Abdullah as the leading ladies.
Billa 2 is said to be a prequel to the earlier film and will track the birth and rise of the dreaded gangster, Billa.

Billa 2 is big budget bet for Tamil films
Production News
Production gets underway today on $7 million gangster thriller Billa 2 that is set to be one of the biggest Tamil-language films ever produced.
The earlier Billa (2007, pictured) about a drifter who becomes a big-time mobster was directed by Vishnuvardhan and proved an $8 million hit. The new film will be directed by Chakri Toleti and see Ajith Kumar return in the title role.
Preparations for Billa 2 — a prequel which charts the protagonists early years as he transforms from a refugee into a gangster — have been plagued with repeated changes of director and cast. But broducers are convinced that they have a major franchise on their hands and anticipate shooting a Telugu version next year.
Kumar is joined by Huma Qureshi, a model and theatre actress, and Bruna Abdullah as the film's two leading ladies. Sudhanshu Pandey (Murder 2) plays one of the rival gangsters and Malayalam actor Manoj Jayan also has a key role.
Billa 2 is presented by IN Entertainment, a Hinduja Ventures company, with Chennai based Wide Angle Films producing. IN's Sunir Kheterpal and Wide Angle's Suresh Balaje and George Pius are credited as producers. It is the first Tamil-language production for IN Entertainment, which also controls distributor Serendipity Films.
Shooting will take place at locations including Hyderabad's Ramoji Studios for 40 of its planned 90 days, before moving to Goa, Pondicherry and unspecified spots in East Europe. It may also shoot in Bangkok, Thailand. Delivery is scheduled for April 2012 to coincide with the Tamil New Year.
"The business for Tamil films has grown tremendously since 2007. We are working towards carrying the franchise forward and leaving no stone unturned to provide whatever it takes to make Billa 2 into a much larger film than the film released in 2007," said Kheterpal.
He says that the company has received significant interest from sub-distributors in India. "However, we will only start discussing the film's exploitation after the end of the Hyderabad schedule. And, as we are hoping to give it a much wider release in international markets than other Tamil films" he said.
Billa 2 is the first Indian picture to use the Epic RED camera running at its full 5K resolution. RD Rajasekhar is the cinematographer. Other key crew include Selva Kumar (Madrassipatnam) as production designer and Yuvan Shanker Raja as music director.
The film's plot has significant overlap with the original Don (1976) starring Amitabh Bachchan; in 1978 it was remade in Tamil as Billa with superstar Rajinikanth. A hit Hindi-language retread, Don (2006) starring Shah Rukh Khan altered the ending so that the the title character could live. Khan returns in the upcoming Don 2.
